...your VIP lapse, the yellow envelope will still be there but you won't be able to see your PMs.

Bottom line, don't get upset if you don't get a response to your PM.  The recipient may not have gotten it.  At least that's what I tell myself, lol.

All usernames have a yellow envelope by their name, whether they are VIP or basic. So you can send a PM to a basic member but they can't open it.  

Now if there is no envelope, then it is an alias, and since only VIPs can have aliases, any name without an envelope IS VIP.

I still recieved email from TER saying I had a PM, of course it waited until I regained VIP to allow me to read it.  My theory is the envelope was still there.

...by their handle when they post whether VIP or not. You would know they had VIP if they PM you but unless they tell you to PM them you wouldn't know otherwise. If someone posts with an alias you know thay have VIP. But that's no help unless you know the alias of the person you want to PM.
