Well, if you work for the city, government, police, school, military, law firm, or anything that can be verifiable by a website, they will call the MAIN NUMBER found on the website and ask to be transferred to the number that you supplied. They won't directly call the number you gave them, unless they can see it online, ads, newspaper, etc. I am glad how thorough P411 is.
P411 was not able to verified me "other ways" so I had to search CV for providers who didn't require screening. Once I have 2 references for P411, I was able to join. It wasn't that hard and it wasn't that bad either.

it's not a hobby phone or one of your phones. It's an effort to insure that you work somewhere as part of verification.
However, if you're self employed or retired or an independent contractor, join P411 or similar and they'll verify you other ways.
Any phone number at your place of business. An operator or admin assistant's line where the lady can ask for and be transferred to your line or your office phone with voicemail. If you do not have an office phone, your dispatcher's number works if he/she will tell the lady that you're unavailable or out on a job, ect.
If you are retired or self employed, just tell the lady. There are other ways to verify you are not LEO and she may be willing to use them.
