A provider can't confirm me by calling my work nuber because I noonger have one.  So am I SOL?

... calling your employer.  

You can call their 800#, explain your situation and they will offer other info you can provide instead of a work #.  That's what I did.

indicate on their profile if they are newbie friendly, which means lighter screening.

with no central office...  alternate screening is necessary.  Every gal has her own approach & in any event should not be discussed on an open forum.
