It might help her.

If it's just a hotel you do not want to go to, be prepared to help with the upgraded rental fee.  I'd let her know your concerns, and  see how she reacts first.

Is is appropriate to suggest a change in the hotel the touring provider has chosen? She is unfamiliar with our city and has chosen one in a sketchy area. Of course any added expense would be covered in the envelope.

And if you would cover the added expense, she will appreciate it very much..Sometimes, I guess providers just book a hotel due to the price but not necessarily due to safety or comfort (I guess it depends on her rate as well). Safe Office is a great resource for us, maybe you should suggest she signs up.

All taken care of. Feel much better knowing the lovely lady is going to be in a safe area.

to seek opinions of locals as to where to stay for her safety and convenience to primary market area for hobbyists.

I agree keystone. Many touring ladies ask on my local board for info about places to stay, or stay away from. I have been asked about this topic so many times by touring ladies that I wrote up something in a word document. Now I simply cut and paste it into an email that can be sent to the lady. Most are always very appreciative! And if I end up meeting with them during their visit, sometimes they go out of their way to show me just how much they appreciated it....lol
My "touring pack" includes not just hotel info but also info on proximity to restaurants, day trip ideas etc. Nothing like the perspective of a native to help inform a visitor.

identify hobby hotels in public posts, since it could invite very bad attention.  Keep it all PM.

Any idiot can research a hotel before arriving and know by the star rating or the area rating, if it's a go or a no. I've only been duped a couple of times, but it had more to do with construction that was not reported. If you hired a high end gal, paid a deposit, etc. she should have better sense. Sorry, but even if you are totally new to an area, you still have the means to research before you book. Even hotels.com will give you hundreds of reviews about said hotels, star rating, neighborhood average, hidden charges, if there is a key card required, etc. There is simply no reason not to do the work for a date such as this.
