You are only allowed one alias.

I think you will have to ask admin about changing it.  I can't find anything that tells you how to do it.

Contact TER with the contact us button, tell them you would like to change your alias. They will remove your alias and you can choose another one.

Do you know what happens to existing posts under the old alias that gets deleted?

I wonder if the poster name remains as the now defunct alias or do they revert to one's regular handle.

Also, is that deleted alias forever retired?

My old alias posts remain under those names. But I gave up on the whole alias game. My alias is....

You get only one alias, but you can change it every three months, by contacting admin

(using "contact us"). All your old alias posts will still be there under the old alias.  
Only VIP members can have an alias.
