If someone is using VPN

I hope everyone is well. I've looked for the exact place to put this but it is difficult to determine where exactly on the boards this should go.

As a huge tech person, I find analytics to be fun to analyze. In looking at my analytics, I noticed my bounce rate is pretty high, between 70-80 percent depending on the day. Would someone be able to determine why it's so high? Is it a web design or aestetics issue. I get amazing compliments on my site so I'm slightly stumped?

I think it's great when we all try to get better and help one another do so. I would love any input from the community.

Maybe it's my device, but there is no obvious click point to get past your landing page. Maybe that's why you're getting single page sessions.

This is rather intriguing. On the home page, you just have to click the words or panel to get to the section you want. Now if you are actually browsing a page, at the top is a large "X" to exit out of that page and go back to the home page. Whether a person is looking at it via mobile or not it is the same.

Thank you for your input!

Of serious ones.

I'm not A tech guy, and I had to actually look up "bounce rate" (though I had an idea based on your context)
Anyway it could be many reasons why people "bounce." One is if the site is hard to navigate or not user friendly (i.e. the clicks to the other pages are not that easy to find) as the other poster mentioned. Another reason is popups and ads. Some websites have a lot of those and many people just exit rather than wading through the BS.

Another reason, is they have seen enough on one page. Personally I do that a lot. If the rates are out of my budget range or the pictures don't attract me (and many ladies have a pic on their main page) I have no need to go any further into the website.

Thank you for your response!

I can definitely say that I do not have pop ups *laughs*. I, as well as many others, have found the site quite easy to use. However, I may make a static menu at the top of the page. This way those that do not grasp the "slider" menu can use that. It may upset the aesthetics but it's ok.

You do have a point about attraction or rates. However, to see rates, you have to get past the home page. My confidence tells me I'm a pretty exotic enchantress. If it's due to non-mutual attraction, I think they are out of their mind. ;)

Again, thank you for the input. I'll take it into consideration.

Good point if that rates out of clients budget range no need to any further. Who cares if people tech or not.

Since you asked. It took me a few times to figure out how to get from page one to your other pages. People should have to figure out how to do that IMO.

You want to make it as easy as possible for people to navigate.

Thank you for your honesty! I am working with my web designer to fix it immediately. I appreciate you being so blunt!

I was just throwing out examples of why people "bounce." I did not mean to imply (infer?  Where's Conan :)) that all those things apply to you. (Pop ups etc.) You asked why people bounce, and I answered why people will leave a site, without specifically referring to your site. As to the rate thing, it was just an example too. Most providers actually won't put their rates on the first page, so someone like me might check out 2 pages (home page, rate page) and then "bounce." No need to go further. However if rates are within my range and pictures are attractive to me, I will keep clicking on other pages.

As to attraction, it's great that you have that confidence in yourself, but reality is reality. Everyone has different taste and some people will find you attractive and some will not. :)

Now when I mentioned navigation I was also just giving a potential reason and not directing it to your site, but now 2 people on this thread have mentioned navigation specifically regarding your site, so that is definitely something you should look at. Just because you find it easy to navigate, does not mean your potential clients do. It looks like you are looking at that now according to your reply to Steph.

Good luck!

Your site appears to be sophisticated and well done ... but too complicated for many (bounce rate?) of your clickers. This is because of the nature of the biz, I think. Many of us do not have a lot of time or privacy or other factors limiting our time on-line and navigating TER and websites. This ain't Disney or Yahoo News.

My general advice is:
NO FLASH
No fancy scripts
Fast loading pages (images with small file sizes, NOT huge HD stuff)
NO AUTO START AUDIO or VIDEO - must give a warning and an opt-IN

Your site is very well done and a piece of programming to be proud of but overkill for the task at hand.

Hi London, great question and thanks for asking it!

When I went to your page (on my laptop), it appeared to load (the %) but then all I got was a solid black screen. I realized my VPN was on (which I can imagine many people in this biz may have) so I turned off my VPN and then your page came up.

But like someone else said above, I noticed flash, which I would get rid of ASAP. Also ask your designer if someone is using a VPN, why it won't show up for them.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for being so sweet about me asking it.

I have noticed that issue with my VPN as well. I either have to turn my VPN off or I have to reload the page. Thank you for letting me know and I will get in touch with him about this.

Thank you! From what I am gathering is it is truly based on the individual user. Many of my twitter followers totally grasp the concept. However, I understand that not everyone is as tech savvy so I'll add in some features to make it more user friendly.

I appreciate your input!

I forgot to add another one of my frequent recommendations.

The home page or welcome page should three (or more) choices along the lines of:

Click [here] for the vanilla version. (plaini HTML, low bandwidtch, no flash, etc.)
Click [here] for the full featured version.
Click [here] for the mobile friendly version.

As others have already said, many of us use VPNs or older, lower tech devices to avoid messing up our newer, higher end work or family computers with undesirable cookie trails and so on. Be sure to test your revised pages using what your readers actually use (VPN, Crippleware, Windows 7, etc.).

It's all good! In my opinion, being blunt is an ASSET. I think we all dance around issues way too often. I really do appreciate your feedback, love.
