Ok, you can get a date without a reference or none of us would be here. Not that it is easy but it is possible. Now without a reference or two there will be a bunch of good ladies who you can't see right now so put them aside. Now the first type you can get without a reference are those who do not screen at all, a risky venture and they may not make a good reference for future ladies. Also you will get a higher then average call response just like you described from that type. A better choice is a well reviewed lady who will work with other information in place of a reference, or a verification site like p411 or date check and some ladies will accept newbies who have been verified.
As for your calling problem, I'm not sure if your talking about girls who will make an appointment with you and then when you get there do not respond to the second call, a problem that does occur among certain types of girls ( see well reviewed girls and you would know about this before from the reviews) or are you talking about never reaching the girls or getting responses at all. If you are never reaching girls or getting call backs it could be the message you leave causing the problem or again are these well reviewed girls?
Non replies to emails could be because of something you said or didn't say in the email to them. I wouldn't say any guy is held to spelling and punctuation, but if the lady has a web site with specific instructions spelled out and you haven't read and followed those instructions then you will not get a reply.
It can be frustrating the first time, calling can be especially difficult unless you get lucky and she answers immediately. But I have a 90% success rate with email but then I do a lot of research before I email. I may not get a reply the same day but I get replies, even in the early days when I had no references.

you can't get a date without a reference, but you need a date to get a reference.
i've given up calling them. they lead you on, you are clean dressed and ready, and you call them when the tell you to and guess what. no answer...leave message...call is never returned. this behavior is consistent. not just once. exact same thing on maybe 5-10 calls.
did you know that if you contact them from a website, your chances are about 1 in 12 that they will respond?
i don't know how guys get dates.
i understand they look out for their safety and all. but to be rude, inconsiderate and unprofessional while doing it is just wrong.
i have read several places on the internet about how to, and not to approach these women. as guys, we are held to such strict standards that even spelling and punctuation are important! if that kind of professionalism is required of us, isn't it right to expect the same in return?
i hope someone answers your post. i would like to hear a good non-narcissistic answer to it.
if it makes you feel any better, we can't be the only guys with this problem.
