Wow- thanks everyone for the great info, esp you, Impposter. More info than I expected, and so well explained to boot! Thanks!
After I read this post, I did a little experiment. I upgraded my photobucket account and refreshed my page, and boom - my broken link pic came back. The one I posted today is also still up.
So - the key is spend the $3-5/month for extra bandwidth! Crisis diverted. haha.

Your photo is working for me, but that won't stop me from explaining how photos work or don't work.
Your image URL is:
i1361.photobucket.com/ albums/ r671/ jennaevans/ NON - WM/ Jenna_zpsnw32kc14.jpg
Your pics are stored on the photobucket servers, not on TER computers. TER is only a middle man in the photo / image posting. TER kind of says:
"Here is the subject line and other info. Here is what the member posted: "Hi, my name is Jenna." Here is the URL of the picture Jenna wants inserted here: photobucket.com...kc14.jpg . Go to that URL, download the temporary file and display the picture in this space: [ pic ]"
Your photo link must be on a public and available site. The link address must be correct. If photobucket goes down for some reason or if their hardware and bandwidth can't keep up with picture requests, your photo will time or generate some other error.
Some pic hosting sites remove or block images that they think violate their PG-13 policies. That could block a pic permanently. TER says, "Send pic kc14.jpg." and the server replies, "No! Pic not available." or "Not allowed."
Another possible cause of the problem. I use a variable proxy server. Photobucket might say, "We just got a request for a pic from a website that we don't trust or that makes too many requests for data. We are temporarily blocking it." Or, the proxy server I am using might say, "Our user has requested a pic from a website that we think is security risk. Block the request." (Photobucket is legit, so that shouldn't be a problem.)
I'll guess it was a temporary glitch due to too much traffic and the request timing out because it took too long to download.

While we are on the subject, how do I prevent or fix a broken photo link?
I posted my first EVER pic today as Jenna (eek/yay!) and it was all good for several hours, then suddenly the little icon popped up and no more pic.
I've seen this a LOT on the photo board... why does this happen and how can I fix/prevent this?
Thanks!!
xo
Jenna
I guess the way to cut down on missing pics or errors is to go with the BEST hosting site with the fastest servers and plenty of bandwidth. "Free" is sometimes slower than "paid."
