Thanks for the replies.  I do have a hobby email, still don't feel comfortable hanging it out on a general board. Good advice reporting a problem concern. Seems like a provision distinguishing who can and can't receive PMs might be a good idea.

Bottom line: I hate to leave a fellow hobbist hanging.

I only have a basic membership at the moment. I recently received a PM notice. I'm unable to access my mailbox because of my basic membership. I understand this is a VIP priviledge only. No problem on my part. I feel it makes me look like bad for not responding to whoever sent me a message. I try to be an upstanding member of this community, just don't feel the need to spring for a VIP membership just to read one message. I've submitted reviews and earned short term VIP status for the contribution.

My question is: why would someone be allowed to send a message if I can't receive it? If I only have a basic membership shouldn't the system show a default. Something like, Member can not receive PMs. This would let the sender know the receiving member doesn't have access to VIP functions.

The person who sent you the PM does not know that you are not currently a VIP member.  There is no provision for letting someone know your membership status.  I would guess that whoever PM'ed you probably thought you were still a VIP member since you written reviews.  You could post a note on your regional board saying you no longer VIP and cannot open PM's.  Maybe include your hobby email so the person can contact you.

You get 2 days of VIP & can check the mail.   I've had it happen recently...  but since I surf reviews from time to time, I caught up on my mail when I did.

I read your post differently with emphasis on the Q:

I also wondered about that before I went VIP and still do when I send PM to a person of unknown status. That is an excellent feature that can be programmed into the system in many ways. "Check recipient status" upon entering info in the "To" field or even after hitting Send and notify the Sender if there's a problem. Etc.

TER is around 10+ years old and I guess they didn't think of that whenever they built the internal email facility or it was too difficult or costly. Can they update and change it? Sure! Why not? But they haven't updated or changed a lot of things (TER ID Number in Review Submission Forms!!). So, we make do.

As you read the Newbie board you will notice people asking how to get the Review Submission Form to get filled in automatically (auto populate the standard fields with Provider info) around once a month.  Good idea, but not ready for TER-Time.
