Hey fellow newbie hobbyists. I have a question for you...

I don't have a iPhone (yet), I have a Blackberry. I've done a few searches on TER and it seems that with iPhones, even if you have the damn thing turned off, your activities and locations can still be tracked.

Is this true for Blackberries? I'm thinking of getting a hobby phone or Google voice, but I'm currently going through a separation so I need to know if that's even necessary or if I can just use my regular Blackberry number. I'm fairly low tech so I want to keep it simple. I just figured out how to turn off location stuff and I removed all the Facebook stuff (the app) from my phone and I set up an email through blackberry where nothing personal, work or hobby related comes through (an email address is required for a Blackberry).

Can I just keep my Blackberry turned off? Or Remove the sim card when I'm hobbying? Or should I destroy the sim card now (I have an excel file with all the numbers I need to call so it's no big loss to me).

Thank you. Sorry if this seems stupid, I just don't want my Blackberry to bite me in ass, I'd prefer a Provider do that instead. There's a lot of info on iPhones but I can't find that much on Blackberries. Plus who invented "Geotagging" in the first place. It's pretty fucking stupid if you ask me. Why the hell would I want people to passively know where the hell I am?

I don't have a smart phone but I believe from the Gen Discussion board there is some way to disable it, at least temporarily.
I recommend keeping your hobby life & your civie life separate.  Google voice if you choose.  I have a low tech hobby phone (tracfone).  Especially now, you do not want to give the other side ammunition.  
Also hobby email.  There's a lot of info in the self help section (link by the lifesaver) and read back on this board until you can answer every question yourself.

Dude . . . bro . . .  you should go to Wallymart and pay cash for a tracphone to use SOLELY as your hobbyphone.  You should go to a free email site and set up an email account to use SOLELY as your hobby email.  These simple precautions should greatly reduce the risk of your hobby life affecting your civilian life at the least opportune time.  There are already lots of good articles here on the newbie FAQ discussing in great detail how to acquire and use hobby phones and hobby emails.
