So how does a hobbiest maximize discretion, minimize getting busted by LE and SO? 1.) dedicated cell phone? 2.) source of funds separate from your business and any account your SO may audit? 3.) screen voice mail and use caller ID to the max? Any and all tips on the above-- and other areas-- greatly appreciated.
I use or buy a calling card, (2) I have a credit card in my NAME ONLY, (3) I have a po box in another town where my credit card bill is sent. I pay the credit card bill with my blackjack earnings via a money order. I have a hot mail address for contacting the incredible indies I wish to see. The limit on my credit card is high enough that I can cover all my expenses .. and if I fall short, I pay the minimum that month ... the only draw back so far is if we run a credit report the credit card may show up so I always try and keep the balance at zero. If you have alot of credit cards to many to remember then just cut your SO's up and change the billing address and use it. So far I'm almost 10 years into the hobby and no problems yet ... hobby safe hobby well hobby all you can be .......
This is a good strategy with 2 problems...and both have to do with the credit report. It will list all accounts and it will list all addresses used by the owner. It will also take 7 years for the information to go away. The problem is how to explain a mystery card and a mystery address. The SO might not notice. However, anyone noticing both and having any imagination would know something was up, even if the balance was zero. This to me felt like I had set up a time bomb that I had no control over. Even if I stopped hobbying the data would still be there for 7 years. The only good thing is that the addresses and credit cards are usually listed in different areas of the report. This means it is not immediately obvious which credit source is being sent to what address. I had used this system and decided it was too much risk. Now I use cash only, whihch is also easier to hide.
