Any activity in this hobby is all about calculated risk(s). Each individual must do their homework, review the facts and decide on what their own comfort level is going to be. The CDC and most health insurance providers, as well as many others, have detailed websites including photos of what to look for. A quick search engine on STD's should yield plenty of results.
I mostly wanted to respond to the "where to get checkups" question. Most any city/town will have a local health clinic, planned parenthood, etc, for testing purposes: some may even allow for anonynous exams, but don't count on that. The down side to these clinics is that you may not always be able to obtain any further treatments at some places should you ever have the need; though they may be able to help with a doctor referral. If unable to find a clinic in your area through your health insurance, yellow pages, etc., you might also try contacting the CDC for assistance.
You are absolutely right... the risks you take are calculated ones. There is always the YMMV rule and it applies to both men and women. Do what you feel comfortable with. There are such things as dental dam available either online or at various adult novelty stores/ book shops. You can also find several contraceptives available free of charge at the county health clinic or Planned Parenthood. Those are also your best choices for testing of STDs. Not to mention cheap and anonymous. Just call the hotline to check your results a few days after you visit and get your cultures.
