I know this is the Newbie page. I know that we all have to spend a little time getting our feet wet here. I also know that not everyone is computer-proficient.
But, would it be possible to add, preferably somewhere PROMINENT, a link on how to use the 'Search Messages' button at the top of the page?
I know that it is the nature of this board that the same topics will come up often ('What is GFE?', 'How do I get references?', 'Is is weird that I am attracted to my neighbor's dog?'). But is seems that lately, the same questions are asked while there are previous threads still on the first page.
A simple, thorough primer on WHY and HOW to use the 'Search Messages' button might alleivate some of this repetition.
One: The reoccurring questions are easily answered by the great information contained within the Newbie Manual link already there. So if the poster has already not availed himself or herself of that resource, another link won't help.
Two: Newbies are newbies. They need to be able to ask their questions. I think it encourages them to start to participate, and I think that should be facilitated, not squelched. Baby steps.
Three: Reoccurring questions should be used to educate through the answers received. Newbies may not necessarily be new to the hobby, but they are all new to the site. They should be educated as to the use of the boards (including how to search), conduct on the boards, and what self action is expected from each poster. If you will, a personal approach from individual posters rather than a general "click the link" thing.
For example, when a newbie posts a question, instead of just saying: "search the board," the answer should be how to search the board with a link to a previous post or two on the subject. It would be nice as well if the replier was to include a suggestion that when the newbie goes to the regional boards, he or she should search those boards in the same manner before posting as the patience level there may not be as high as found here.
This could be a fourth, but it is relevant to #3. The participation of the TER vets on this board is cyclic. The same question posted next month (or week even) may get different answers from different vets. This is good for both the newbies and vets IMHO, and also encourages participation by all.
By all means, please tell the newbies to search the board, or at least read the first page - but also tell them why.
Good idea though, but the above are the reasons why I haven't.
They know how to turn on their computers Know how to open browser Know how to type their way to TER Know where and how to make an account Know how to locate the Newbie board.. And know where to click start new topic or reply
