I was reading the legal corner board and there is a post about blacklists. So, by following a few links, I arrived at the website of a blacklist. Obviously, since I'm not a member, what I could see was limited, but what I did see was scary.
For example, I saw someone blacklisted because they were no call, no show, no email and no text. I understand this is annoying, but is this really on the level of physical or verbal threats, abuse, stalking and other criminal activity? I believe providers should be treated with dignity and respect and people who act in dangerous ways towards them should be reported. NCNS is wrong and annoying, but is it really something to blacklist someone about? For all the provider knows, the hobbyist could have gotten killed in an accident. You never know.
It's just scary to see that because it made me realize that providers can put hobbyists on a blacklist for pretty much anything, whether it's legitimate or not, and the site itself said that the posts cannot be removed.
OK, enough of my rambling. Here's my question. I don't think I've been blacklisted. I haven't done anything to deserve a blacklist, but just to be safe and for piece of mind, I would like to make sure I'm not on any blacklists. Are there ways to find out whether we are on a blacklist or not? If so, how?
Google your real name and see if anything comes up. Also google your phone number and your email address.
If you are on any of the black lists, one of those should bring it up.
As for your observations, I agree, putting a gent on black list for ncns or just being annoying or rude is abuse of the system. If I pull a gent up and he's on a blacklist site, I always read the reason why and then decide with my own judgement wether or not to see him.
if you go to the general board and search "blacklist" and set the date range to about 300, you will find many threads discussing blacklists, if you care to read more about them. There have also been threads on this newbie board and the legal board and some regional boards, but I know the GD board has lots of threads on the subject in the past year.
For your general information, there are some public blaklists and some provider only blacklists. You will probably never find out if you are on a provider only blacklist, (unless a provider tells you) but you can find out if you are on a public one. Do as Naomi said and google your name, email address, phone number etc. You should also google your TER handle, and handles you may use on other boards. You can also try googling and adding the word blacklist. For example "John Smith blacklist" If you are on one of the public ones, it should pop up. however if you have a common name like John Smith, it will be harder to find, as there will be tons of google returns.
