END OF MESSAGE

I just bought a new Trac phone. I paid for it with my debit card. After I left the store, I wondered if that was a bad idea since they scan the bar code AND the serial number at the register.

Should I return it and go buy another one and pay cash? Or am I worrying too much?

Thanks.

It could be tracked to you, if you murder someone or other violent felony.  It still keeps your real phone clean of tracks...  which is important if you have a SO.  Unless the SO catches the purchase, it's no biggie.
LE is not going to run down the history of a trac fone because it doesn't prove anything.  In most jurisdictions, LEO must witness the misdemeanor to have it chargeable (unless you admit it).   If they have you, the phone does not matter.

I've had the same number 4 years with no issues.  I think you're worrying too much.
Activate it through the handset center menu button & add minutes the same way.  Don't link it to an email, not even a hobby email.

Yeah that's kind of what I figured too.  I'm not going to go out and rob a bank or anything.   I have no record and I can't imagine any LEO would go to the trouble of tracking it all the way back to my debit card for seeing a provider.

HOWEVER....since I haven't opened it, I'll just take it back tomorrow and pay cash for one.  Peace of mind.  It's a good thing to have at soon-to-be-50.

Thanks.

I don't have any worries, even if VM gave law enforcement my phone records, LE can only speculate about the calls between me and providers. LE would have to track and trap me. Some law enforcement agencies may waste time tracking and trapping a john, most have more pressing business to deal with.

Every tracphone has a serial number. If the police really wanted to track you down, all they have to do is find out the serial number to the tracphone you bought. That serial number will tell them what store that tracphone was sold in, and the store can look at it's purchases to see when that tracphone was bought. Then LE will look at the stores security cameras to see who bought that tracphone.

Also when you turn the phone on, you have to register an account with an e-mail address on a computer which can be traced back to you by your IP. so if the police really want to find you they will.

Good thing is police only take these measures when a person has committed felonies, not paying to see providers. So I wouldn't worry about police trying to track you down, unless you plan on doing something crazy.

Well, if you use a new TF for rush right out & comitt a felony, good luck.  The hotel cams caught the CK killer, not his trac fone.
Good luck on watching WalMart security camera footage from 4+ years ago.
No you don't.  I have my TF guide open in front of me.  You do not need email for a trac fone...  It can be done www.tracfone.com online or by calling 800-867-7183 from another phone.   Minutes can be added from the handset, center button.  Do it in your car & throw the incriminating minutes card in a public trash container.

the time you described working to catch a guy that wants to get his rocks off. Now, if they suspected that john was involved in a major crime, like robbery or murder, then all bets are off, any good police department would track him down, whatever it took within legal bounds.

If you hobby in a small city or town where cops don't have much going on, you should rethink your decision.

Re-think which decision? The phone? Or hobbying all-together?

I don't see how anybody living in a small town could hobby (in their town). They have to go to a bigger city.  I do live in a small town but I'm only am hour from a city of a million.

I returned the first phone yesterday and went somewhere else and paid cash for another one. Now I gotta figure out how to activate it w/o using my phone or computer.  Lol....kind of a challenge now.

You can use a computer. If you know how to set up a virtual machine or use a bootable ROM you can run this privacy centric operating system: https://tails.boum.org/

If you don't know how to do that (and are unwilling to read the tutorials) then as long as you are thorough in deleting the tracks left on your personal computer (cookies, history, etc) you can just run TOR on your PC: https://www.torproject.org/

That's about as safe as it gets.

I also live in a small town.  At one time a well known provider was doing incall from the tiny hotel but the highway exit...  with friends & family driving by!!  Even if I parked around back...  impossible to explain.  I drive an hour or more to a nearby city area...   No one knows my car there.   Be Smart!
