1. Research, research research.
2. Start with well reviewed providers
3. Screen, screen, screen
4. Play safe always.
5. Throw away phone.
6. Don't work from home  
7. Don't play at home
8. Follow advice of more experienced
9. Be respectful
10. At anytime you feel insecure, don't be afraid to walk away
11. No paypal, I don't recommend using any plastic either unless it is a prepaid card to throw away
12. If you can't show, call!  Do so with as much notice as you can.
13. Always be fresh and clean
14. Don't overstay your welcome
15. Be mindful of your surroundings. Some of us veterans follow this easier

read the self help center completely.  That way you know what is expected of you as well as the providers.  I agree that research is the number one consideration.  It's our version of the providers screening us.

Yes, as you can see, I didn't make this list specifically for the hobbyist or the provider, but semi-generic.  True, not all encompassing, but a good start.
