If you did get pinched by LE (as a hobbyist), realistically what is the worst thing you'd be looking at?
Also, if one was busted while out of town nowhere near his hometown, would the consequences be less? It wouldn't be nearly as bad to deal with a name in the paper if no one knows you. In my hometown, I'd be scared of losing my job or sales clients.
but in just terms of legal stuff, you may have to travel back to that jurisdiction to settle matters in court. It varies quite a bit from state to state. A good lawyer could advise you.
I agree, not having your picture in the local paper is a big relief.
but besides that as you mentioned losing your clients and losing your sales if you are in one or losing your job due to that is a double whammy and we stupid men still do it and on top of it pay for it too haha
Don't treat anything I say here as gospel truth, and check the laws in the particular jurisdiction to see what their rules might be.
In the jurisdictions that I've researched, getting busted for patronizing a prostitute is a misdemeanor punished by writing you a ticket, and you'll wind up with a fine (ranging from $250-1000, generally). The laws provide for potential imprisonment, but it rarely, if ever, happens. However, if you're caught trolling for hookers in a car, it might get impounded. You won't generally get arrested unless you piss the cops off somehow. You might be able to plead guilty by mail, but it's also possible that you'd be required to appear in court. Also, if you happen to get caught with a minor, you're in serious shit.
If drugs or some sort of violence are involved, the stakes get much higher. Count on at least spending a night in jail, and needing to retain a lawyer to get through it all. This is going to get pricey, and will vary widely depending on the circumstances of the bust.
You'll probably want to poke around over on the "Legal Corner" discussion board for more detailed information.
We had an executive that travelled the world on business. As luck would have it, he got caught soliciting a male friend while in Texas. After the CFO bailed him out, the highly religious company founder talked him into resigning. Needless to say, watercooler talk the next day was pretty lively.
