Are BDSM Singles Sites for Real?

Hello, and apologies if I am off-topic (if so, please let me know):

What's the deal with the alternative dating/BDSM web sites?
Are the people there truly looking for casual encounters, dating, and so on, or are these all just scam sites designed to extract your money?

Your input appreciated.

...I joined Alt.com just to see what this world is like.  I have yet to actually hook up with anyone on it but have had a few on-line relationships, one that was quite stimulating although her pix were fake.  My guess is many of the people are very real but, as with the TER world, you've got to be careful.  Beyond that, anything I could say would be total speculation.

A friend of mine who's heavy into BDSM turned me on to fetlife.com. It's the facebook/myspace equivalent of the BDSM world. I joined at her request, and found everything to be straight up (no pun intended).

There's definitely dating and casual encounters to be had on sites like Alt.com and FetLife.com. FetLife is free, though it's more geared towards networking and less on finding you someone to hook up with, so you can't search for certain traits and such, I don't believe. I know those two, at least, aren't scam sites, but whether or not you will actually find someone to hook up with (that you would WANT to hook up with) is a matter of many personal factors.

To be more specific, I'd like to meet someone who is into the BDSM lifestyle.  That is, normal people who have their kinks and aren't afraid of them.

I would join fetlife.com. It appears to be the best place to get started that's real and not a scam. Look for some of the social gatherings in your local area that are open to those that are new to bdsm.

Fetlife is an excellent social networking tool :) There are so many regional boards on Fetlife you are bound to find groups in your area, and that is an great way to start meeting people. Fetlife isn't necessarily a dating site, but getting involved in local groups is way better than trying to figure out who is real on some of the other sites.

Good luck :)

I agree. A lot of kink clubs hold socials so you can network with like-minded individuals. The socials tend to be pretty casual (though I'd certainly ask first). It can be a good way to meet other kinksters. The leaders of such groups also tend to be pretty helpful about the scene.
