You must be a VIP member to use an alias and you can determine when a poster is using an alias because the envelope that you click on to send a PM will be missing from the line where their handle is.

I got a reply to one of my posts stating that I shouldnt use an alias.  Can anyone fill me in on an alias? We all have TER names, thus arent they all an alias? Also, regarding the "private message me on response" option: I assume this allows completely discreet communication between TER members? What is the difference between PM and just posting on the boards, we are all members anyway...Thanks everyone, sorry for the dumb questions...

An alias is name you use in place of your primary TER handle.  They are used mainly to post so that no one knows who is the real poster.  In your account manager you can create a number of aliases.  If you want replies to a post asking for information, you should use your real handle.  Yes, it's an alias too, but you can't get Private Messages (PM'S) with anything other than your 'real' handle.

If you are a VIP member, you can use the PM system to communicate with other members in private.  It is not the same as posting a question in a forum, no one else can see it.  "private message me on response" means the poster does not want to discuss the subject in public.  It's probably for both your protections.

Read the self help center at the top of this page, it will help with some details.

They are only private as long as both parties keep them that way.

I don't think anything it completely discreet unless you are the only one who knows.

I am a member of another site where the owner can read PM's if he wants to.

I never put anything in a PM that I wouldn't want to become public knowledge.  Does that effect the usefulness of the system? Yeah, a bit, but I don't give out (or solicit) indiscreet info anyway so it's not that big of a deal to me.

It's the internet. Anyone who thinks that your words are truly secure is an idiot.

As the the patriarch of the followme family,
the way I see it the term alias AS USED on this board is any name other than the one on your TER birth certificate.

For the purpose of this board The name on your TER birth certificate is your "real name" and any other name you use is an alias.

As for me, I suppose, technically, you could say I have numerous aliases, however since the Followme family is so large I allow my cousins and other family members to sign on using my TER log in name then go to their names such as:

SantaFollowmeClaus
FatherFollowme
EasterFollowmeBunny
PopeFollowmeLXIX
DrFollowmeOBGYN
RabbiFollowme
Followmeopolis
ClassFollowmeClown
CoachFollowme
to name just a few of my family (there are many others )
So technically these are aliases , however in my case they are all real members of the followme family, so i do not see them as aliases....

To the best of my knowledge they do behave themselves, I hope !

I hope this clears it all up.

They participate when they can and as they see fit.

Thank You

BTW in the self -help center at the top of each board has a link to the acceptable uses of aliases

You must be a VIP member to use an alias and you can determine when a poster is using an alias because the envelope that you click on to send a PM will be missing from the line where their handle is.
