Is there more risk involved in booking through an agency vs. an independent? It just seems to me since these agencies have been in business for so long they are a lot safer to go through. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Don't ever assume that one way of doing something illegal is safer than another way. In either case the key to remaining safe is do your homework. Whether you are seeing an indie girl or an agency girl look for reviews here on TER and ask questions on your regional board.
There are a lot of great agencies out there but there are also a lot of really bad ones. The same holds true for independent providers. Operating with common sense and discretion are key in both cases.

An Indie works off her own reputation at her own standards and her own set of rules. She can be as flexible as she likes. An agency girl follows someone else's rules and may be brand spankin new at this game. It's all a personal choice and one you decide on for yourself. Most agency girls see more clients in one day than some indies see in a week. It's a different way of working for some. There's no split on the fee so she can see less clients and be more flexible with her time and scheduling. I know i couldn't work for an agency. I like to screen my own clients and know some about who I am meeting. I want to get a feel for their personality and wouldn't feel comfortable leaving that in the hands of someone else. Someone who's financial gain is based on how many clients I see. Personality and a connection of sorts has a lot to do with how well things work out, for me at least and no one else can judge for me what I like and am comfortable with. I suggest you do homework and research the girl you want to see. read her reviews and no matter if she's an agency girl or an indie and see who turns you on. There are many agency gals who are terrific as there are indies it's all a preference really.
since you are a newb, and if this is your first venture, you might have an easier time booking thru an agency than an indie. Reason being, an indie will need some personal info if you have not seen anyone yet for screening purposes. The agency might be a little less demanding in that respect.
If you do not have any provider refs, consider joining one of several verification sites, like Date-Check, Preferred411, or RS2K. This will make your screening far simpler.
Independents are safer. Big agencies draw attention. If they make a mistake like hiring an underage providers or get involved with money laundering or drugs, zippo, they are done. I use agencies but do not become attached to one.
