In lieu of references some providers and agencies will accept membership in screening agencies such as Roomservice.

Also some will accept copious amounts of personal information such as work and home phone numbers and addresses.

You don't mention whether your wife is already in on this or if this is a surprise for her but I should mention that any self-respecting provider will want to speak to your spouse to make sure that she is cool with this before coming over.  Too many have been embarrassed with the spouse didn't see things exactly the same was as their hubby did.
