Yes,if you are going to use a lady as a reference it is better to contact the lady first and make sure she is okay with giving a reference for you.

Most are okay with it.  Asking or giving a heads up is a polite gesture, but not always necessary.  I've gotten reference requests without a heads up from the client and it's been just fine.  

Sometimes ladies will have it on their website if they are reference friendly.

Generally if a lady used references as a means to verify gentleman, she is usually willing to reciprocate. Some ladies will post on their website that they do NOT provide references so it's best to make sure that isn't the case before contacting them as a reference. It can make them a bit angry if she's already stated it up front.

Although there are some women who don't participate in the reference system, most ladies are more than happy to provide a reference.

Here are some tips to make giving and verifying references smoother:

1. Give the lady you intend to use as a reference a heads up in advance. Some ladies (myself included) won't verify a reference unless they know that you initiated the contact yourself.

2. Some ladies have a set time frame following their last visit with you during which they will provide a reference. For some it may be 3 months, or 6 months, or a year. Don't expect a lady to give you a reference if a considerable amount of time has passed since you last saw her. use the ladies you have seen most recently first.

3. When providing the reference to a lady you wish to see, include the website, contact information, and link to reviews of the lady you are using. Don't make her have to do the research herself to verify the referencing provider is legitimate.
