Yes, it really helps if you know which way to turn to get to the elevator. Some will provide explicit instructions on getting to their door.
I have no problems waiting in the hotel lot for a few minutes... Usually I pretend to be on the phone. I also arrive early to ensure I know I am at the correct hotel, get past traffic delays, and then drive away to a place I can hang out and wait

As long as it's a midtier or upscale biz hotel you really don't have a big risk of LE. Stay away from the lower tier chains especially if the room doors are outside on a catwalk.
Lots of people coming and going in the lobby makes its easy to blend in. If you get the room number before you enter the lobby than just walk right to the elevators. As some would say walk in like you own the place.

The main thing is to act/look like you belong there. If you have not been to that hotel before, ask where the elevators are when you are getting the room number. If a staff member says hello, respond and keep going. When you get to the room, it's always nice if she leaves the door cracked so you don't have to stand in the hall waiting for her to open the door.
I always bring some candles in a WalMart bag, so it looks like I just went out to get something. Others may bring a briefcase. The more you look like you belong there, the better off you are.
never had a problem. One helpful trick: ask her where the elevator is in relation to the main entrance (you will have to call her from your car to get her room number). This way you can walk in in all confidence (past the front desk if necessary) just as if you are one of the guests residing there.
Unless you know the layout, ask her. If you are looking around, hotel staff might well ask you if they can help... because you LOOK LIKE you need assistance. If you walk right through, with an overnight bag, brief case, shopping bag, you just look like someone who went to get something from your car or went shopping. I don't like sitting in my car in front of a hotel... I've been eyeballed by LE Patrols & house security. My practice is to arrive early enough to allow for traffic delays. Then I withdraw to the corner coffee shop. I time my return to the exact time. If I've seen her before, I sometimes call from my car in the coffee parking... arrival in 60 seconds.
