From what I understand , the real purpose behind screening is to make sure you are going to pay as expected? Or is it to determine if you are a gentleman or a jerk? Since it seems most screening focuses on employment, I dont see how they can judge your character from that alone?

seeing a chain-saw killer. Screening is for the protection of the provider, and to some extent, the client.

you're right, they can't check all that with a call to your workplace for exapmle.  That's why most consider references from other reliable providers the best form of screening since it can address most those areas.

All of those reasons, which makes it hard for someone like me who works for themselves from a home office. Who are they going to call to verify I am me?  I am a software engineer that works on contracts. I am new to this and anxiously trying, but I understand the reasons. As far as someone being a jerk, I treat everyone respectfully, but I bet these ladies have some crazy stories :)

I have had a similar problem. Luckily I had a voice email at a clients site the number of which could be verified and then I had the provider leave me a message that I then immediately responded to by email. Think of it as a problem like a new client trying to verify you before contracting your services how do you show them you are who you say you are, that's all the providers usually need to start.
