I'd be cautious, doesn't sound right to me. All a well-known visiting provider has to do is put a listing on the New York ad board. That's what it's for. You wouldn't be looking for an agency and asking such questions.
I'm just now seeing some of the replies to my post. I am a part time provider and I do not tour much. I did not realize I would actually have a chance to participate in the hobby until the last minute. I didn't know if I could visit an agency or what my best option would have been. It was all kinda last minute. I promise I was not up to anything "fishy". I hope to be back to New York soon. If I do it will be well planned. Thanks for the help. Sorry if I alarmed anyone .
