In Iran, there are many Arab-Iranians and many Persian-Iranians.  (Persians are not Arabs.)  Also, there are Persian families who left Iran a long time ago so they are not even Iranian anymore, but they are still ancestrally Persian, hence Persian-American or Persian-French or whatever

3. 8/5/2014 at 11:57:46 PM I impposter explained why SOME people say "Persian" instead of "Iranian" to answer your "Why?" question.  In this political climate, there are probably other reasons to identify as Persian rather than Iranian. You CltLuvr alias made a joke about Aztec - Mexican which was pretty good.  
People do similar things about where they live to make an impression: Park Slope vs Brooklyn or Upper West Side vs New York
