As a NATIVE New Yorker, I've seen the fireworks COUNTLESS times, one time SO close, the sooty REMNANTS of them fell on my FACE! 
The BEST seat in TOWN? Honestly? It's the one where you get there BEFORE anyone else, don't move for fear of losing your place, don't eat/drink for fear of needing to answer Nature's call, and, oh, you have to STAND or sit on the bare sidewalk/street since NYPD no longer permits chairs (Thanks, Bin Laden!), and do ALL that for about...TEN hours before the ACTUAL event takes place. Yeah, a nice spot on your comfy sofa where you can grab a cold one and some popcorn while watching the sky above the East River light up? Yeah, THAT'S the best spot. Just my 2¢...
