I have to attend a meeting near Penn Station next week, but my train arrives about an hour before the meeting - any recommendations for restaurants or bars near Penn Station? I just need to kill some time before my meeting.

Yelp is the TER of food. you're going to get the same result from asking and yelp is instant.

anyway i like this place   www.sevenbarandgrill.com

There is plenty in the lower level of the station. If you find your self by the E train you'll see a Papaya/hot dog place, good for cheap food and they serve beer. So does the pizzeria next to it. Plus both places have TV's so you can catch whatever is on at the time.

Thanks - I will check out these sites.  I have Urbanspoon on my iPhone, so was going to check it out when I arrived, but figured it would not hurt to ask here too...

The New York Times has tools on its site that let you browse what's available in different neighborhoods and narrow down your choices. And you can read their reviews online, too.

The New York Times also offers a great little app if you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or (I believe) Android phone. It's called "The Scoop" and is a listing of their critics top picks around the city. The categories include restaurants, bars, coffee bars, events, shopping and more. The app generates a Google map showing the locations of each establishment. There's a brief review in the app and a link to the full New York Times review. I really love this app (it reminds me a little of Vindigo, for anyone who used to have a Palm in the early days of mobile computing).

New York Magazine and Time Out both have excellent dining, drinking and night life sections with similar tools that let you browse various neighborhoods.

And, if you already have an online subscription to Zagat, you can take advantage of its listings and reviews. Without a subscription, you get limited access to its content online, though.

There are lots of other sources, like the Serious Eats Website, but I'm sure your time is limited.
