they have a great wine list also. And the vision of Paul Castellano rubbed out at the entrance adds to the allure.

the crowds & noise but the food is very good.

Morton's but pricey in my book even for new york.

Also Di Niro's TriBecca grill has good steaks.

I liked Wolfgang's, an offshoot of a Peter Lugar's former maitr'd.  It was close to Julie's east side location. Great combo, steak and sex.  Sadly those days are over!

..in our party of six, during lunch, and NOT at a busy time, one of our party was a male African-American, wearing a suit. I think this was their way of telling us--don't ever show up with a black man ever again, n*****lover. The steaks were inedible--cold. Terrible.

Bryant & Cooper is great.  So is Burton & Doyle and they make a better Martini.

Wolfgang's is a new favorite, and Smith and Wollensky is a constant winner.

I've had them all...

Never really had a problem except that that they are all way overpriced.Add in a couple of GG martinis at $12 -15 bucks a pop
and veggies and salad ala carte and one can see why.
The atmosphere at most of them don't compensate for the cost either... but hell it's the big apple... and sometimes you have to spend a bit more for a name and dining location.

If you can get past the name thing I find that some of the bar/grill places do a great job with a whole lot less salt and butter, yet at less than half the price. Many can charbroil a good butchered T-bone medium rare and smother it with mushrooms and onions and it's just as good, if not better.

I once had such a heavy MSG filled steak at one of the above places that I woke up the next day not ony with a swollen woody but my whole body was swollen as well.

Cheers!

Damn! Do you really believe that's true? I don't deign to cast aspersions on your perception, but it's hard to believe that an establishment in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world would take umbrage at an Afro-american in an upscale eatery who was properly attired?

Holy Shit! Are we talking Bridgehampton here? I didn't know there was a Bobby Van's in New York?

The Palm (original or Two, no tohers), though their
out of town joints aren't bad. The sirloin.
Ruth's Chris ON Second Ave: bankrupt after 1 year.
Palm going strong after 80 years.

I have always had extremely lethal gas, but lately it has gotten worse (better, in my opinion, because I truly enjoy my panty poofs). I was over at my guy friends' place, out on the front porch for a smoke break. I was joined by my friend and the dog (who was doing plenty on her own!) I ripped a really good one. The kind that feels really thick and hot, and is slow to permeate. It took a few seconds to waft over to my friend, who actually gagged! He picked up a lid to the trash can and tried to fan it away. (Keep in mind we are OUTSIDE!!!!)The dog got a whiff, and ran back inside through the doggy door. I am laughing so hard at this point, not only from his reaction to the aroma, but also because I am especially proud of this one. I am in desperate need of a potty at this point, not just because I am about to launch a rocket, but because I am starting to pee in my pants! I had a lot more good ones that night, I wish I could remember what I ate! I have come to the conclusion that I should bring a change of underpants wherever I go...

I vote for Sparks.  I go there fairly often.  Great food, great service and an excellent wine list.  And I've been there with African American co-workers many times and never had an issue.

I find this very hard to believe, I've eaten in Sparks plenty of times/reguardless of how I was dress and who I was accompanied by I've never received substandard service, in fact the steak was always to die for ; ).  Maybe you just happened to stop in on a bad day and the service had nothing to do with your dinner guess

My point is that some of thse places take a great steak and over marinade, tenderize, and dry rub it...and salt is sometimes a key ingredient in what they do.

Cheers!

And it was at 2PM, towards the end of the lunch hour when it was almost empty. It came to a tab of over $200. I gave a stingy tip because I was so outraged. Everyone complained about how bad the steaks were. EVERYONE. So, perhaps you are right, they just serve bad steaks during the day on some days.

I still will never go back.
