Gramercy Park - convenient to midtown, Soho, the Village, downtown but not as crazy expensive. There are some beautiful blocks near Irving Place. Upper East Side/Upper West Side are probably too family/yuppie oriented.

Mo is right on with his suggestions - these would be upbeat and accessible neighborhoods - Stay away from Upper manhattan, it's pretty stiff and predictable

below 80th and I absolutely love it here. Pretty brownstones, relatively quiet, but still lots to do, lots of shops, restuarants. Im also right next to Central Park (big plus), by the Natural History Museum and two major avenues, right by two subway lines and there are always plenty of cabs available. So its really easy and quick to get to midtown, downtown, or even UES (cabs just drive through the park). For me its got the right mixture of livibility, hipness, and culture. Im also not paying out of my ass in rent. I hear Chelsea is a great area too. Definately stay away from the UES though. Where ever you decide, good luck!

I'd say Chelsea area, 6th or 7th ave. in the 20s.  Despite
Chelsea's "gay" reputation, diverse wealthy people are
moving in to the NEW CONDOS in that area. (Lot of condo
buyers are investors and glad to rent without tons
of questions asked about source of income).
These are new bldgs., with spacious apts., luxuries,
great kitchens etc.
I'm only a "little" prejudiced b/c 2 recent ATFS live
in that area and their swank digs make 'em just that
little bit sexier.
I am a commercial real estate manager, no residential,
so no econocmic interest in all this.  Good luck Sky !
