Hi peeps.  I have read some reviews that reference "mixers"; from the context they seem to refer to social events where providers and hobbyists can meet. Can someone let me know if I am correct and how I go about getting information about these events in NYC? I would greatly appreciate some guidance.

That would be the best place to look for announcements of such events.

You then contact the person who is throwing the party and ask to be invited or what is required of you to be part of the list.

I don't think they are all announced.  Browse this board and look for the women who go to the parties and become a client.  If you are a client of someone who's been to the parties, then you are more likely to get easily verified to attend one.
