Beware of this if you get a call. You can never be too careful.
Hope this will not happen to you. I received this email from a close friend:

don't some companies ask for the three numbers.

not in the manner of scam that you relate, but in other instances, i have been asked for the 3-digit number. like from online retailers(when i purchase by phone)
