St Thomas is one non-stop flight from NYC and has midrange and high end resorts. St. John is nice but requires an extra ferry ride once you land in St Thomas.
Turks and Caicos are far more attractive and worth the slightly lower longer flight.
It really is gorgeous. Don't stay in Tahiti. Go to one of the other islands, either Bora Bora or Moorea. Tahiti tends to be to commercialized. The other islands are truly paradise.
