I am wondering if anyone can tell me, is Jersey City really up-and-coming (the Journal Square area?) as they say it is or is it an unpleasant place to live?

What would you say are the up-and-coming areas, not too far from the city, but still with lower rent (relatively speaking) and lots of character where you can have a car?

Jersey City is nice...Queens is better...

Jersey City has been going through a revitilization for the better part of 10 years now. Values have been on a steady rise(however all of Jersey has been as well). Those people who got priced out of Hoboken area's have moved to Jersey City and they have several excellent neighborhoods.

Caution there still are area's I would recommend you lock your car door as you drive through however those are becoming fewer and fewer.

As a resident of JC, quick and easy into the city via Path and light rail. I would reco Jersey City Heights, Newport, Journal Square Area. Anothor area close to Liberty Park that is nice as well.

Some rents comparable to Manhattan, but you get more for your dollars.  HOKEYBOKEN is great, if you looking for a bunch of yuppies to go hang out.  Jersey City is very diverse in its culture, hispanics, asian, east indians, african americans, white, etc.  Still areas of JC you will need to stay away from as noted.  Great views of Manhattan, great people, much friendlier than NYC, and 3% sales tax.

Lets not forget much lower income taxes also...
