I have been asked to tour NYC is a couple of emails, and I thought I would ask you guys about HOTELS midtown, I have searched the thread not seen much, but first I need to know hotels with no key access to the floors, and I assume busy hotels are less hassle security wise. I will check the rates, but I have a feeling the prices will make it out of my range, as I dont think you gentlemen can afford too high.

because no one will publically name the hotels they use because we must assume LE monitors this board.  You have a PM

Make a search on the hotels you have in mind and call their front desk.
Ask if keys are necessary for elevator access and ask the layout of the lobby as well.
They will give you the information without any problems or asking any personal questions, because travelers do call them with tons of strange inquiries.
If you feel that you need to use an excuse, tell that you are traveling with an elder family member who is technology challenged or have poor eyesight and will not be able figure out the key system.
If you need suggestion about hotels, contact me...I can give you the information that might be halpful to you.

there are a number of "easier" access hotels near grand central - but very busy - trade-off for ambience -
