They have decrypted emails from their service and provided that info to US LE enforcement authorities in the past. See Wikipedia. They have a backdoor for decryption. They log IP addresses also, so they are not 100% secure. While you are probably correct that we don't need encryption of emails for the hobby, my take is better safe than sorry. Thus, I have opted for protonmail.
Can anyone suggest a secure email I tried proton mail but not sure if its free - its will not allow to create a new mail Can some please advice I don't trust gmail any more
Perhaps when you were trying to set it up, the name you wanted was not available? I had no problem creating a protonmail account last week.
I have been using hushmail.com and you may want to consider it. It's free and it provides security (unlike hotmail or gmail, there is no big company trying to sell advertising around your email).
Some people don't trust hushmail - there is a rumor out there that hushmail.com turned over user data to LE. That is something that any legitiamite US business would do.
Protonmail is based overseas and so the theory is that they would not turn over email accounts to US LE. And to be extra secure, it is advised that you create a protonmail.ch account -- because the email servers would have zero connection to US jurisdictions.
One other aspect of "secure email" worth mentioning. Hushmail and protonmail both provide the option of "encrypting" email messages. What this means is that the email message is not sent over the Internet in a text format that someone else can intercept. It can only be read by someone who has the right password. Hushmail, protonmail and some other email systems all support encryption. At this point, I don't think the level of scrutiny on this hobby really requires going to encrypted email - but some people are getting very paranoid and preparing for the worst.
