This question goes to anyone who has google voice.... Are you having problem lately ( dropped calls,missed calls, text message stuck in queue etc)
I started to encounter problems today.. Sorry for those who tried to reach me... Hopefully problem will be better by morning..

I don't use Google Voice, but there was a discussion started on another board by a hobbyist who has had intermittent problems using Google Voice (mostly not being able to get phone calls to connect). The problem seems to be related to the fact that it relies on Internet access and not just a regular cell phone signal.

I had an account before google bought it, back when it was called Grand Central.

I have never had any reliability issues at all.  It's been perfect for me.

I can't imagine why someone would need to have Google Voice for any legitimate purposes.  It's one of those products that you can't really find a LEGIT purpose for, but you're glad it exists.  :)

On the topic of it going down...that doesn't surprise me.  As good as Google is, it's still an internet-based system, and the thing that always bothered me about using it is that there is a massive electronic trail on it, whether it be voice messages left on there or text messages or whatever.

Google Voice is a free way to turn your phone into a 2-line phone and I recommend it to most people.  

For someone who does consulting, or a little work on the side, it's nice to have as a business line.

Or, you can use it as your primary phone number and never care about keeping your old number when you switch carriers or move.

You can have custom outgoing messages for different groups.

You can block calls from whoever you like.

I give my GV number out to my college, or people that I might not want to have my cell phone number.  I don't have it ring anywhere.  I let anyone who calls leave a message and then I get notification of the message.  It's great.

And, of course, I have a separate GV number for the hobby.

But, GV is free.

And a 2nd line on your existing iPhone can be much handier than a 2nd phone.

The whole point of a second phone for me (I have two) is to be able to do things on both phones simultaneously.

I see what you are saying for GV.  To me it's just easier to use two real phones than to duct-tape it with GV on one phone.

Plus, if I have a trade going on between two parties that I am brokering, I can do that with two phones.  Can't do that with GV.

In this situation (admittedly specialized and unique), I don't want one side hearing what I am saying to the other side.

In fact, Google Voice is plain old telephone service, routing calls along the phone network to existing ten-digit phone numbers in ways that ordinary phone services can't. It doesn't need an internet connection. If you want to use Google Voice as a VoIP service, you need to install Talkatone on your device. This will save you minutes with your cell phone provider. I use GV as a secondary phone line and honestly I never had big problems so far

Well i was wrong, sorry..you do need an internet connection to access your GV account. But the call itself is not VoIP.
