October 26, 2002 Man Is Killed in Apartment Near Times Sq. By THE NEW YORK TIMES
A 50-year-old man was stabbed to death in an apartment near Times Square last night during an attempted robbery, the police said.
The victim, whom the police did not immediately identify, was killed during a struggle with the robber in a seventh-floor apartment at 123 West 44th Street, which is between Broadway and Avenue of the Americas. The killer then fled in a taxi, according to the police. Law enforcement officials said six women were also in the apartment at the time of the stabbing, about 6:15 p.m. Two women sustained injuries that may have been related to the attempted robbery, the police said. One suffered a possible seizure, another had a possible broken ankle.
In a news conference near the scene, Deputy Commissioner Michael P. O'Looney said the robber had posed as a delivery man to get into the apartment and tied up people with plastic handcuffs before the fatal struggle occurred. Detective Kevin Czartoryski, a police spokesman, said detectives were looking for a man between 25 and 30 years old, 5-foot-5, with a slim build.
