I think you should start with a reputable agency like Aphrodite as a good introduction to the hobbie. I am certainly newbie friendly, but I've found that first timers feel less stressful when dealing with an agency. And your goal is to relax and have a great time, right?

There is a wide disparity of rates, and the ladies charge what they are comfortable with.  Personally, I have found that many $$$$ ladies fit the bill with me, though I would say that the hotter ladies tend to have higher donation requirements.  

My best advice is to rely upon reviews first...the more good ones, the better.  Take ads on Eros with a grain of salt...many of those ladies have no reviews, and some use fake pics,  There are, of course, many good providers who advertise on Eros, and one of the ways you can usually tell who legit is by her posting her rates.   At this point, though, I no longer use Eros or CitiVibe, and avoid Back Page and CL like the plague.  There is too much volume on those sites to sift through, and some of us don't have the time to cross-check against reviews.  Personally. I have generally found that the ladies who advertise here on TER are generally good choices.  Most of them have enough good reviews to justify your consideration, and likely will not disappoint if you decide to contact them and set up a rendezvous.  You may have to pony up more $, but it's worth it.      

As far as agency vs. independent, I have always favored the latter, but there are pros and cons with each.  Perhaps you should try both, and see which works best for you.  Happy hobbying!

Keep it simple. Filter #1 -What services do you require. Not everyone will do what you want. Filter #2 - What is the most you are willing to spend. Not everyone comes in at that price. Filter #3 - What does she look like. Find someone whose photos you trust to be real and who you find attractive. And finally get a VIP membership here and do your research on the above mentioned items.

I would go to ac and play it safe. That have chics over there for 3 and a half bills and the majority of them are legit. If you see the wrong chic being a newbie it will fuck your head up, depending on how bad she wants to play you out. I am not shilling for ac, but just giving the dude my opinion.
