When I posted the op, it was soon as the incident had happened. At that particular time the information was relaeased, it was not known that the police had hit the by standers. I am surprised the police shot the by-standers when they aren't even allowed to "chase" a high speed driver thru the streets of nyc for the fear of hitting innocents. (stems back to the 80's when a high speed chase took place in staten island, and a police car ran over a 10 year old boy on his bicycle crossing the street and killed him).

There have been so many shootings this past year involving by standers (shot by gunmen), I find it horribly disturbing.

As far as the cops shooting 9 by standers to hit one lone gunman makes me nervous. These are cops who are suppose to be going to the gun range on a regular basis to get their aim in good working order..

I think there is more to this story then meets the eye...

but time will tell..

... far from it. That shit goes on elsewhere... shooting one or two people is another story. And that's not counting the police.

Downright scary.  NYC is definitely getting worse.  I'm actually surprised it's taken this long, with the economy in the shitter so badly.

I've always maintained my guard when walking around the city, but that's just me.

Today was a terrible, terrible tragedy.

I was at an M&G in Worcester, MA last night, and heard about this on the drive out this afternoon.  Yet another loser going postal...sad to hear that so many innocent bystanders... :(

Were all hit by police gunfire?

It's hard to be controlled when your adrenaline is rushing, and it's a wide-open space like in front of the ESB.

"Nine people were wounded, all from police gunfire, although none of the wounds were life-threatening, cops said. Most of the injuries were to the legs, feet and arms."

I work in the markets, so I was watching all the news updates in my newsfeed.

... and hit him 7. These guys are required to pass, not just take, regular target practice. I realize there is a big difference between shooting at an armed killer and a paper target but that is what they are trained to do. From 8 feet away and with a very capable weapon they missed more than 50 % of the time, and yes, all those other people were hit by police bullets.

The fact that the economy sucks ain't gonna help, either.

Time to get the blind cops seeing eye dogs to point them in the right direction.  Its all about the panicky young cops who are there for 20 and out pensions.  Old timers are steadier.

These are the cops protecting us against terrorists, they will be the first to run.  The videos showed they approached with their guns holstered, they should have been drawn.  The perp never even shot once at the cops.

Seriously, these guys are heroes and you are critisizing them for not being perfect shots?  You try shooting a moving target who is shooting back at you and see how that goes.

So the dude pointed his gun at the cop and they're just supposed to stand there
and wait to take a bullet?  This after the dude just murdered a guy in cold blood.

Live by the sword ... die by the sword!

In the video I saw the guy pulled out his gun and pretty much stood there. If he wanted to he could have blown those cops away. The cops were the one's moving. They back stepped and side stepped and drew their guns and unloaded on the perpetrator. I can just imagine that if my life was on the line like that I would have missed with some shots. The guns recoil and the adrenaline is flowing plus they were moving away and to the side. I guess if you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen, but it is not as easy as it seems to be on TV shows like CSI. No excuses just an explanation.

J

One:  He never shot back, just drew his weapon, it was jammed and had only one shot left in the mag.
Second: 17 shots for one guy, they squeeze too many off, if they had old six shot revolvers they would be conservative with their shot pull and few side accidents.
Third; One officer was suing the NYPD for being forced to write and arrest quotas so he was on punishment duty.  Old foot corner patrol, not as they are saying rapid response unit, highly armed.
I have shot at those that shoot back in training and thats the problem, they teach  them and recert them on paper targets in controlled envirns, they should be trained and retrained in environ situations with pop up targets or laser shots coming back at them as in combat training.
NYPD is just a 20 yr and a pension job, they are stooges who have become overtime hounds and revenue agents to meet budget losses.
No reason any police officer that travels with a partner vs Nassau, NJ, Suffolk etc who ride alone to earn over 6 figures with o/t based on petty arrests. They always have backup with them.
Look at the video, the guy was 8 ft away in the roadway and they shot sidewalk patrons 15 ft East and West.
Give me a break.
Hope the city pays millions for those who took direct shots, not fragmentation damage for negligence in training.

Like the cops new he only had one shot left.  What a stupid statement.  But I'm sure you would have rather seen the cop murdered too.

Tell the truth, you're a cop hater whose had his problems.

You could care less about the guy that was murdered and his family.

"While Johnson, 53, never fired at the officers, there was no indication that the gun jammed, Kelly said. His weapon still held one bullet, and Johnson carried extra ammunition in his briefcase."

You know about the absurd trigger pull for NYPD issued guns right? It's on the order of 15-20#'s, which is ridiculous for marksmanship...I'm not excusing the poor marksmanship, but this is a ridiculous factor that most certainly contributed.

I expect them to be a better shot. Lets face it, their gun is at their side 24/7..I would HOPE that this being their career/job and the fact that guns are pointed at them more often then the average person, one would think they would\dhould be a better shot. Like someone pointed out, he(shooter) was pointing a gun at them. I would think with as many police officers that showed up, they would have had a clear shot at HIM at some point before the shooting began..

Either way, cops yell "freeze, police".. I am sure most people were scrambling to GET OUT of the way of guns on either side.

I do believe there is a problem when there are that many innocent by-standers wounded due to police activity..

It does make me nervous to think that as many cops you see in an hour, or a single minute here in midtown, that they are all carrying loaded weapons that they HAVE NOT practiced using.

YES, I know how to shoot a gun. YES I do go to the gun range often. and YES I can shoot a moving target (thanks Dad) and NO i am not a cop..So, if I can do it, why can't they..

just sayin...

It was bad shooting, period.

I have friends who are cops, and one in particular did the SWAT training, was Mel-Gibson-as-Officer-Riggs accurate in his ability to shoot, and he wondered how the cops shot so poorly.

Good thing all bystanders had minor injuries, relatively speaking, and are expected to survive.  The city of New York better start accruing for the big lawsuit coming.  Those victims have every right to go after the city for this.  The video shows it all.

I have lots of friends who are cops.

Another typical one-line, useless retort by you.
