Enjoyed the time I've had with one of my favorites, a provider from here in Chicago who makes NYC a second home, and on both occasions we had a terrible time getting around.  Cab drivers were bitching about Uber, driving by empty, or simply not available.  Never had this problem  

I would look for a yellow cab, and if you don't find one after 5 minutes, hop on the subway.

agree subway-  doesn't matter if it is a cab or uber- if you are stuck in traffic you aren't going anywhere-  remember the famous scene from Barbarians at the Gate when they are stuck in traffic during the Nabisco buy-out talks and they get out of the cab and run to the meeting place?-  the subway for the most part runs pretty much on schedule so you can go to MTA's site-  put in the time you want to arrive and it will tell you what train to take

These apps are great if you want to move 'quick' around Manhattan (and the outer boroughs.

Lyft has an option called lyft line- so you know what you are paying from point A to point B. The only down side is that it's their share option so the if someone calls a lyft and your driver is going their way he's obligated to pick that person up- so you'd be sharing the ride (at no extra charge to you of course!)

I've never ridden the NY subway.  Looks like that's my answer.

Subways to go north and south. Cabs to go east and west, unless you're at 42 or 14th.

It's being shut down this month. Even their NYC office has been closed.

I'll only use a cab if I'm in a rush...otherwise the subway. I live on Long Island, where the cabs are much cheaper (but they can't take street hails, a person must call for a pickup).

I have not seen any Plutocrats driving Uber, instead I see people working hard to get ahead in life on their own. The  popularity of Uber may be due to offering clean cars and friendly dependable service.

I use uber whenever possible, and almost always have a bad experience when I'm stuck with a taxi. Subways are the fastest way to get around town in the middle of the day though, especially in midtown. Manhattan is a pretty small, and crowded island.
