Hello New Yorker's,

I have friend coming in town and he wants to take me to see a show and do dinner after or before.
I have no clue how to pick one much less where to eat, but I love music and I noticed Leona Lewis is staring in Cat's.
Help?

I personally didn't like Cats but below are a few shows that I really enjoyed.

Avenue Q (I related the most to this Show and I found it funny)
School of Rock
Book of Mormon
Aladdin (Great Show)
Jersey Boys
Wicked

You can't find a bad restaurant in NYC but here are a few of my favorites
Best NY Pizza Abitinos 936 2nd Ave
Best French Rest Per Se 10 Columbus Circle
Steakhouse Delmonicos Kitchen 207 West 36th Street. Not to be confused with the Delmonico's in the Financial District which is the one and the same as the one in the Venetian in Las Vegas.
The Smith location 956 Second Ave also in Lincoln Square East Village Wednesday Night Special is Fried Chicken  But the food is great every night.  
Sarge's Deli 548 3rd Ave

Sometimes, first-time tourists to the Big Apple want to make sure they hit some of the more famous sites, maybe a place they saw in a famous movie or something they've heard about. Who wants to face, "You went to NY and you didn't go to Empire State Bldg???" "I wanted to, but I couldn't find it on the map." when they get home?

Sardi's is a famous restaurant. There are LOTS of famous places to eat.  

Some places are not what people expect them to be but as least your friend can say he's been there. Kind of the, "I flew 3000 miles for THAT? It looked a lot bigger in the movie and the food was pretty lame ... but at least I can say I've been there! ... Tomorrow, McDonalds." syndrome.  

Do you ever use the Manhattan hotels for, eh, well, ANY reason whatsoever. The next time you're in any hotel, even weeks or months in advance of your friend's visit, ask the concierge for advice on the same topics: shows, music (Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall), restaurants. They'll give you a bunch of pamphlets and tourist-y magazines and their personal spin on nearby stuff.

A personal recommendation is a lot easier and sometimes better than sifting thru all the ads and clutter, but maybe something specific will catch your eye (Dragon Boat Festival?) and you can come back and ask about it here.
