There is of course all the normal NY Christmas things like The Rocketts annual Christmas show.  
Is "A Christmas Story" on Broadway again this season? I bet that would be a fun show.
Last year I was in NY when they were having a Santa Clause pub crawl.  It was a hoot.  
Don't forget to window shop on 5th Ave. Macy's is just one of many stores fun to visit during the Holidays.

There are a few christmas markets around town. Union Square is the largest (and I *think* oldest, but don't quote me on that) of them all followed by columbus circle. The bryant park one is a bit more high end but it's wonderful since the rink is there as well. Smaller ones at grand central and somewhere else... st bart's on park perhaps?  

Don't bother skating at rock center. Stick to wollman or bryant park.

For broadway, Book of Mormon is of course great, but be prepared to spend way over listed ticket price. Wicked is another fave. If you're open about what show you see then get deeply discounted same day tickets from the TKTS in times square. There's another location downtown I think- not sure if the selection is as good though.

Macy's is well decorated, for sure, but the other dept stores go ALL OUT on window displays. Saks and BG's are notorious for lavish and decadent displays. In fact, Saks has a rope out to keep tourists moving along in front of the window rather than block the sidewalk. I suggest taking a few walks around midtown at nighttime. Less people and pretty with the lights. Saks and the tree are near each other and BG's only 5-10 min walk away depending on your speed.

Go up to 'top of the rock' - Rockefeller center observation deck.  Far better than the Empire State Building.
Go see MoMA and the Met.  If you like theater then to see something off Broadway rather than a gaudy Broadway show.  Lots of awesome theater at the moment in the city.   PM me for specific recommendations but you need to tell me what you like.
Hang out at some of the rocking NYC bars.  I like PDT and the room down below.
See a show at the Bowery ballroom and at the Mercury Lounge.
Go eat BBQ at Dinosaur BBQ.  Then have a meal at Per Se.  And another at Le Bernadin.  If you can get a booking then have a power lunch at The Four Seasons.
Hang out at the King Cole bar at the St Regis and laugh at the mural of Old King Cole farting.
Catch the Staten Island Ferry.....  Not at peak hour.  Go to the potato famine memorial.  Go to the 9/11 memorial.
Take the 6 train beyond the terminus from Brooklyn bridge station and see the abandoned City Hall station.
If it is warm enough the walk the Brooklyn bridge.  

Extra credit if you can find the abandoned subway station that has been converted to a graffiti art project.
Go have a steak at Peter Lugers and another at Wolfgangs.

Enjoy the gaudiness in Times Square at night.

Go to Grand Central station and try to be lonely.

For some reason, they choose the Christmas season to put giant rainbow lighted dildoes on display the McGraw-Hill building near Rockefeller Center.  Also, giant balls.  

I wonder if they'll be on display again for this year?

Also visit Columbus Circle.  Do some shopping there and check out the views of Central Park.

This was my favorite show thus far and I usually see about 5 shows per NYC visit. The humor and watching the shock of faces in the audience are priceless!
