Personally, I like BLT Steak but I was thinking of taking him to Spark's or DelFrisco's.  He doesn't get into the city that often  and maybe I should start him off with one of the old standbys.

Oh, I am not driving all the way out to Williamsburg for Luger's.  He aint that good a friend ;)

I really liked what they served at Gotham Steaks, but I think they got closed down.

you know deep inside I love you. Just the other night when I was pounding that little 19yr olds cinamon ring I couldn't help but think how much better it would have been if you were there to watch.

S&W has the atmosphere of a great NY steakhouse, to say nothing of the best creamed spinach you'll ever taste.  Shelly's has a great raw bar, and simply the best filet mignon in NY!

and the person wasn't that good of a friend anyway. So that leaves Smith & Wolensky or Sparks...those are the top two contenders in NYC. S & W is the more "classic" NY steakhouse and Sparks is a better dining experience. Sparks also has the Gotti vs. Castilano history behind it which is a little NY history for your friend.

Either way.....enjoy..!!

Luger's is the best for Porterhouse steak for sure.  I hear they serve Sirloin but I have never tried it.  I personally prefer a New York Strip sirloin steak.  Wolfgang's and MarkJoseph are two Manhattan steakhouses that specialize in Porterhouse steak and compare favorably to Luger's.  BLT Steak has a great sirloin (perhaps the most expensive) but does not have a steak house atmosphere.

S&W has the most arrogant wait staff and in my opinion a poor Sirloin steak because it is not a true New York Strip.

Bobby Van's is another decent alternative.

what do you call the staff at Lugars? The only thing those boys are missing are their old nazi SS uniforms.(no offense meant to anyone)

I honestly saw a waiter one time offer fresh pepper from the pepper mill to someone they declined and the waiter walked away putting the pepper mill down on a waiter stand.  Five minutes later the guy must have had second thoughts about the pepper got up and got the pepper mill himself. The waiter marched across the dining room.....approached the customer and said..."didn't I offer you pepper?!?" the guy responded yes, the waiter took out the little black bi-fold with the tables check in it out of his apron and responds well why don't you just take care of yourself for the rest of the night.....and threw the bi-fold at the guy. The waiter just walked away.

I've never been to Lugers but have heard some similar stuff about waiters there. On the opposite end when I reserve at Sparks they will hold my table for hours with never a complaint.

Never had a problem with S&W , just dont care for the atmosphere

Probably gonna go with Spark's after all.  Out of towners like the name value so they can go back and tell their friends that they were in the place where the Big Boss got whacked.  The food is still good so I don't mind.

Ben Benson's is very underrated, IMO.  The staff is very friendly and they have an excellent menu and food.

Too many good restaurants!

Go to Wolfgan's on 33rd and Park.  Just like Luger's but in the city.  The owner worked at Lugers.  Same steak, similar sauce and a little less attitude.

I will probably go with Morton's - Nice place, good service and more selection.
