Just tell them which room you are visiting so that they can call ahead and get her permission for you to come up.  Whenever I've been to a building with a doorman, the lady always let me know beforehand, so it's never been a surprise.  Just act normal, and you'll be fine.

I tell the concierge the apartment number and my name and they call up to warn her?  

if its a doorman building I do it with a big smile and when I leave I have a bigger one!

Yes they are there to be security, but if you present yourself well and just provide the info they need, you're just a blip on the radar of their work a day world. Don't sweat it. They've seen everything, especially the guys that are older and have been working as doormen for forever. Imagine the kind of weird shit they encounter at 3am on any random day of the week.

A couple of points from those threads:  

What kind or doorman are you talking about?  I've encountered quite a few "types".  (1) Sit there, take up space, read the Post or News and ignore almost everything (2) Sit there, nod their head, back to the Post (3) Say hello, ask where you're going, as long as the reply is reasonable, they don't care (saying "Apt 3406" in a 22 story building is a WRONG answer). ... a few variations in between ... (9) mandatory sign-in or call-up to confirm you're a welcome guest.

A second point is that there are a variety of professionals who meet clients in their homes. Psychiatrists, business consultants, astrologers, designers, artists, lawyers, masseuses ... Just because someone gets a lot of visitors doesn't mean squat unless she or the visitors make it obvious with a "wink, wink" or dumb comment to the doorman.  

It might be embarrassing to visitor and hostess, but it isn't against the law to have a lot of people visit your home

in manhattan every doorman calls up if you are visiting, thats what they are there for.  

the days of walking in like you belong are in the past. pre 9/11

as long as the person is expecting you there is no problem

this isnt college and this isnt a dorm!

we are paying them and unlike the cops they know it
