Bedbugs in NYC

Just visited a highly-rated property... whilst Googling in advance, the frightening word "bedbugs" came up.

I felt most at ease, and it was in an elegant, trusted neighborhood known to many.

Is the bedbug scare just that, a scare?

Thoughts and discreetly written experiences, please and thank you via PM.  I like to think the bedbug hype is simply that.

Appreciating NYC (when I escape from the fog of jetlag!)

bed bugs are no longer just found in the shantey towns of cities. They have been found all over Manhattan (bed bugs uptown shattered) My in-laws got bed bugs while staying in a 1000 sq ft suite in top casino in Vegas.
i'm scratching now

me a dang year and three steroid injections to rid  myself of the allergic reaction caused from bed bugs.

What I've learned:
-the insecticide "Deet" that kills bedbugs was banned for use in the US around 3-4 years back which led to an increase I'm bed bug incidents....Said it wasn't environmentally friendly...ummm, thanks gov!
-I bought "bed bug spray" at the "Dollar General" and now carry it in my Ho bag!
-The CAN fly...heck, I figured it was just another flying insect...after all I was I'm Alabama...lol
-They're in 5 star hotels (mine was 4 stars) as much as lower rent hotels.
-they're more prominent in areas where international travelers frequent (ex: international airports)
-There will be a musty yet sweet smell in the room
-behind and under the top of the mattress will be brown/black specks that looks like dirt bug is actually the little bastards sleeping.
-The fairer the complexion one has (blonde, blue eyes, tends to burn
In the sun kinda person) the more fierce the allergic reaction will be...thu chewed me up.
-The itching will drive you to the brink of insanity. It makes the poison ivy itch a cake walk..!
-If you suspect you've encountered bed bugs do not carry your belongings into your home.
Instead, store items in temps below freezing for 2 weeks or burn it..
-Bed Bugs can and do chew their way through walls and into neighboring rooms. Yep, in multi-family housing buildings/structures they can chew their way into your apartment/condo from your neighbors.

Exterminators can help but they're pricey to de-rid a home of bed bugs.
Burning your mattress and other items like vacuumed cleaner, lines, sofa, etc is common.

Hope that helps cus they're a bitch to deal with!

(sorry for any typos...can't find my eyeglasses...lol)

Smooches,
Heather of Alabama

Yes, the registries are available but by the time the hotel is registered the exterminator has been and gone. The good news is that they are very visible to the naked eye. When you get to your room the first thing you should do is pull up the corner of the sheets and however many layers of bed coverings there are and look closely at the bare mattress in the seems. They are slightly red in color. You can pull a picture up on line of them actually on a mattress to see their size etc.
I've luckily never come across them but I ALWAYS look because they are a bitch to get rid of if u carry them home. Even worse then hotels are movie theaters. :-/
Sorry, not so sexy story :-(

All bed bugs mate by traumatic insemination.[3][23] Female bed bugs possess a reproductive tract that functions during oviposition, but the male doesn't use this tract for sperm insemination.[3] Instead, the male pierces the female's abdomen with his hypodermic genitalia and ejaculates into the body cavity. In all bed bug species except Primicimex cavernis, sperm are injected into the mesospermalege,[3] a component of the spermalege,[3] a secondary genital structure that reduces the wounding and immunological costs of traumatic insemination.[24][25][26] Injected sperm travel via the haemolymph (blood) to sperm storage structures called seminal conceptacles, with fertilisation eventually taking place at the ovaries.[25]

Male bed bugs sometimes attempt to mate with other males and pierce the latter in the abdomen.[27] This behaviour occurs because sexual attraction in bed bugs is based primarily on size, and males will mount any freshly fed partner regardless of sex.[28]

movie theatres.

Had a friend who apparently got them from his suitcase coming into contact with bedbugs on a plane or hotel -- he never was able to find out. I am itching just thinking about this.

Doesn't matter from the slums to the most upscale hotels suites once you have one you have 1000's.

They are everywhere!

They cant crawl on metal. If a hotel has a metal luggage stand use it..

I had a friend come home with them staying near Boston for work...

Now I am totally grossed out.  It really makes you want to avoid hotels, theaters, etc. and become a hermit.  DDT come back!!!  Maybe those who are against DDT should be forced to spend a month in a bedbug infested apartment.
