Weiner Says He Sent Photos and Lied, But Won’t Resign By ANDY NEWMAN, DAVID W. CHEN and MICHAEL BARBARO
At a news conference in Midtown Monday afternoon, Representative Anthony D. Weiner tearfully confessed to sending a photo of himself in his underwear to a woman over Twitter, then lying about it.
Mr. Weiner said the indiscretion was part of a pattern of sending inappropriate and at times explicit photos and messages to women he met over the Internet.
Mr. Weiner, 46, a popular and brash Democrat from Queens who has been considering a run for mayor of New York City and is known for aggressive and sometimes intemperate political commentary on Twitter, apologized repeatedly.
“I have made terrible mistakes that have hurt the people I care about the most and I’m deeply sorry,” Mr. Weiner said. “I have not been honest with myself, my family, my constituents, my friends and supporters and the media.”
He said he had no intention of resigning, that he had broken no laws and that while his wife “made it clear that she thought that what I did was very dumb,” his marriage was not ending. He said he never met any of the women.
After Mr. Weiner’s appearance, the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, called for an ethics investigation of her Democratic colleague to see if he broke any House rules.
Mr. Weiner’s speech and question-and-answer session was the culmination so far of a drama that began over Memorial Day weekend when the conservative blog BigGovernment.com published a close-up of a man in underwear that appeared to have gone out over Mr. Weiner’s Twitter account to the attention of a woman in Seattle. Mr. Weiner had maintained ever since that he had not sent the photograph, though he said he could not be certain whether he was the person in it.
On Monday, though, BigGovernment.com published a series of embarrassing photos of Mr. Weiner that it said he had sent to another woman last month, prompting Mr. Weiner to call a 4 p.m. news conference at the Sheraton hotel in Midtown.
Thank heaven he's not my congressman. He needs to resign ASAP. As a hobbyist, I can't condemn his actions as a man. But he is a Congressman, an attack dog for the Democratic machine, and thus must be held to a higher standard than us mere mortals. His position is compromised, and he should do the honorable thing that Eliot Spitzer did, and step down. Who knows, maybe he'll be able to land a gig on the Fox News Channel as an opposing voice after a couple of years...
Have to disagree, CD. I like Weiner as a politician. Sure he likes the spotlight, but hey, it's New York. I do condemn his actions with these women. Hey dude you're famous. You can't use Facebook or Twitter for ANYTHING! It will definitely come back to bite you on the ass. This is the perfect reason to see independent providers. They are discreet and there's no agency trail (see Spitzer and Vitter). If Strauss-Kahn had just asked his hotel consierge for a referal he'd be back in France now. BTW, I saw a report that Straus-Kahn was seen with a "slender blonde" on his arm the day before. Have we seen her running to sell her story? No. Discretion is one of the best qualities of our girls. I'm convinced most men with power are stupid cheapskates when it comes to sex and are totally taken with themselves.
