It's an email address (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc...) that you set up using a name and address that is not traceable/linkable to your identify. For example, setting up a gmail account under the name of "John Doe" and using the address [email protected]

Can they trace it back to you if you set up a gmail account using all fake info but access it with your everyday smartphone?

I suggest you read up on Google and Facebook and their invasions of your personal privacy. The WSJ did an extensive series on the subject. The bottom line, to me, is that Google tracks EVERYTHING you do on ANY of their sites (I.e. YouTube, G-Mail, search, etc) aggregates it by your IP Address, and builds an entire dossier on you.
