Exquisite. Zagat food rating of 28. But appropriately pricey.

I've partied with Mario Batali a few times, and he's invited me to his places, and in the kitchens. He's a great chef, a nice guy, and funny. Oh he can eat too.  Go to Babbo.

Marea mentioned above is very good and as stated very expensive- also mostly seafood so depending on if you like seafood or not-  Tri-Colori in the Theater district good- reasonable prices- can be a little noisy-  Vive Versa on 51st is quieter and a little better, Bice on 54th is also very good and upscale

In recent years it's become an over-priced tourist trap.  Last time I was there they charged about $65 for a good, but not exceptional Branzino.  Service was arrogant, too.

Agree.  Michael White is an amazing chef.  His older restaurants that have since closed, Alto and Convivio, were similarly amazing.

Even though I hate what he said about bankers, Mario Batali's Babbo is still amazing.  I wouldn't put Del Posto in the same category, though.

For old school Italian, there's Scalini Fedeli in Tribeca, Il Mulino in the Village, and Nanni in midtown east.

Another place I really like is Locanda Verde in Tribeca, in the Greenwich Hotel.

A Voce used to be good until they changed their chef (he opened Locanda Verde).

I also highly recommend Scott Conant's Scarpetta near the Meatpacking District.
