that my spyware and/or virus protection is working too good?   Is there such a thing??

Puck, sorry if this is off topic but did not know who else to ask.  I'll try to make it on topic by saying that this problem ONLY happens when I try to go to my HOBBY RELATED SITES that I have grown to love!

A few weeks, my internet was turned off in error by Comcast.   It has been turned back on but ever since then, whenever I try to go to certain websites (including my own!!), I go to a Comcast site instead...the link is below. It says to disable my firewall, etc etc.  I really don't want to do that...it sounds complicated and I don't want to screw with things (unless its attached to a man. LOL..hhhhhmmmm giggle)!  Is there any way around this?

Are there any Comcast guys or gals out there???
Any techno wizards who know what this is all about?

Help me please!!
Thanks!
Hugs and Kisses, Belinda

on this comcast site, when I click on the link, it just takes me right back to the same website!!!  Try it...

Let's give it a shot.

The page you've posted is the initial setup page for new Comcast cable customers.  The left link is supposed to allow you to download some "magic software" to get your cable modem working on their network.  Pfffft.

However, if memory serves, the software is entirely unnecessary.  Call Comcast support and tell them the software won't install.  If they don't ask right away, tell them you have the MAC address for your cable modem and if they would be so kind as to "add it to their list" of authenticated/valid modems.  The MAC address will be some horrible looking thing printed on the manufacturer's label somewhere on the modem itself.  It'll look something like 1A:00:FF:11:FF

They need that address to essentially allow your modem to connect.  No offense intended, but in case you don't know, the cable modem is the box that has a normal cable tv cable plugged into it, along with a power supply (and likely at least one other cable).

If that doesn't work, the rumor is that you can call tech support again, advise them of the problem, and that removing and re-adding the cable modem service (and subsequently the modem's MAC address again) is a known method of fixing the problem.

Try those things first.  I believe you do NOT need to run their software (even if the link worked) nor do they need to come to your residence.  Thus, you should be able to keep your firewall and antivirus running without issue.

Of course, if all else fails, you might not have a choice, I suppose.  Good luck!!

That does help keep your computer safe.  However, the site to which you are being sent wants you to install some Comcast software  and it's not unusual when installing software for it to ask you to temporarily disable firewalls, anti-virus, etc. but you want to be sure to turn it back on afterwards. I am puzzled though when you say you are only getting it when trying to access only certain sites.  Have you tried contacting Comcast tech support or are all the sites to which your access is blocked not the sort of ones you are comfortable telling a Comcast tech rep. about?

Plus, if they need to come out,  I don't really want them on my computer looking around...my pics are stored on it.  And, it's only certain sites.  For example, I can get to TER just fine but my own personal site is blocked. And, when some of the ladies post a pic, I just see a red X!  I feel like I am missing out on something very special because everyone is commenting how sexy and hot she is and all I see is a red X!!  And her link just takes me to Comcast!  Boo Hoo!  So strange!!

Thank you, Vorlon, I guess I will call Comcast and ask them what to do.  I will wait 'til Monday though soooo if anyone else has a fix, please let me know before then!

Thank you again!
Hugs, Belinda

You could try switching your DNS server and see if it changes anything.  Your computer probably takes it's DNS from Comcast, so you can try this and see.

I don't know what OS you run, so I'll be somewhat generic and assume it's Windows.

Edit the properties of your Network connector and look for TCP/IP or for Internet Protocol  (if you see more than one, select Version 4, not version 6)

Edit the properties of that and you will see a button selection that probably says "Obtain DNS server address automatically"  Check the other one and place these numbers in the boxes below:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

After saving your changes, if you can get through, then it's Comcast that's got some missing routing information.

I was able to get to your page with that DNS in place.

There are lots of DNS servers out there. These numbers come from OpenDNS.com
